My Favorite Theory, Anger And Happiness, By Paul Ekman And...

1. Physiological Specificity. This theory suggests that with each emotion we have, there is a physiological response that is either the cause or caused by our emotions (page 121). In accordance with this theory, anger and happiness are distinguishable by the different physiological components active during these emotions. It also suggests that by changing our physiology slightly we can also help to alter how we feel our emotions. This was my favorite theory that we learned about over the course because it is something that I will be able to use to help me in the future. As an aspiring pediatrician, I am going to have to go through medical school and I have a tendency to overwhelm myself. By knowing that our emotions and our physiology are linked, I know that I can help to calm myself down before an exam by smiling, or trying to lower by heart rate through meditation. Paul Ekman and Wallace Friesen found that when participants were employed in a directed facial action task, their bodies showed differing responses (page 121). For instance, when arranged to have an angry expression, heart rate and finger temperature were very high. This was different then the response to fear because even though it also had a high heart rate, the finger temper was very low (class 9/28/2015). This was also shown in studies done on the blush, by an observed increase in the blood flow to the cheeks and ears (class 9/30/2015). Barings Bank Scandal for Crime and Corruption- MyAssignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about theBarings Bank Scandal for Crime and Corruption. Answer: Baring bank based in London is understood to be one of the most reputable and established oldest global merchant banks formed in 1762. The bank was owned by the Baring family members and any worker was assumed to be from this descend and this led to employment of semi-skilled Baring descendants employees (McNeil, Rudiger Paul 123). The bank collapsed upon a set-back of amount tuning to 827 million pounds resulting from a poor speculative investment strategy in futures contracts geared by Nick Leeson one of the its employees due to lack of duty segregation as he was empowered to be in charge of both front and back offices undertakings in the bank branch situated in Singapore. The Chronology of Barings collapse can be explained as follows: 17 September 1986: This era saw the incorporation of the Baring Futures in Singapore. July 1989: this period saw an outsider from the Barings family, Nick Leeson joining the company based in London. April 1992: Leeson was transferred into the Singapore Baring based branch. July 1992: Leeson formed an error account termed as, Account 88888. By the end of 1992 September: Losses amounting to 8.80 million dollars was concealed in the error account resulting from Leeson trade. End December 1994: The losses had aroused to unbelievable figure of S$373.9 million. January 1995: Leeson was seen investing too much on Nikkei 225 index (Huan, Parbonetti Previts, 2015). 17 January 1995: Kobe earthquake made Nikkei 225 to plunge. 23 February 1995: Leeson had no option but to fly with his wife to Malaysia. 24 February 1995: An error account hidden by Leeson was revealed upon audition by one of the internal employee. 26 February 1995: Barings had no option but to be transferred into administration. 27 February 1995: This period saw BFS being rendered to judicial management and subsequently the company went bust with an amount of loss reported to be S$2.2 billion. 2 March 1995: Leeson and his wife were under arrest in Frankfurt. 6th March 1995: The ING Group, Dutch finance group took over the management of Baring. The cause of the scandal was primarily due to lack of oversight. Leeson was left to do everything ranging from clearance, booking and reporting several trades keeping, and trade futures. He further control over payments, reconciliation, ingoing and outgoing confirmation and contracts and accounting entries. Futures Contracts The futures contract describes a lawfully binding contract bringing together two participants to sell and buy a given financial instrument or commodity at a particular future day at the price already arrived at today. Futures contracts remain instruments designed to permit management of some risk attributed to financial instruments and commodities. Speculators are as well as buying and selling futures contracts to reap from movements of prices. Speculators avail liquidity in this market (Cragg, Idemudia Best, 2016). The future contracts price draws from underlying physical market item. For instance, the gold futures price is anchored on price of gold in physical market. In case of a change in a price of gold, the associated futures contract prices shall as well as alter. From the perspective of the risk management, in case the gold price rises in physical market, the underlying fold future contract value shall drop. The 2 price alterations balance each other hence eliminating price uncertainty risk. Future exchanges tend to offer their individual set of futures contacts thereby providing the enormous array of contracts for risk management. Within Australian market short-run medium as well as long term rates of interest is hedged by means of ninety-day bank acknowledged bill contract, the three-year Commonwealth Treasury bond contract or 10-year Commonwealth Treasury bond contract in that order (Walker Walker, 2017). Basic Rules Explain This Rule The basic rule to be adhered to when establishing the hedging strategy is to carry out the transaction in the future market presently which corresponds with what one intends to undertake in the physical market at a future date. Where a borrower schemes to sell its paper for instance, bills or the corporate bonds for raising funds, then he will sell the future contract presently for covering the rate of interest risk exposure where he actually issues the said paper (Rick van den Brink, 2015). The hedger shall close-out the open futures stance by purchasing a similar futures contract where he issues the said paper. In case an investor schemes to purchase certain shares where surplus funds are availed yet is concerned the price of the share will increase in the meantime, he can purchase futures contracts presently. The open stance will be closed-out where the real shares are brought by selling the conforming futures contracts. Procedure The trading of the futures contract takes place on the formal exchanges like SFE. A market order shall be placed with the broker to purchase or sell the given contract. The transactions are carried out by the open outcry on the floor of exchange like CBOT or in electronic trading platform of exchange like SFE. The great portion of exchange currently utilize the electronic trading systems, nonetheless, the hugest exchanges, CME and CBOT utilize open outcry. The electronic trading system matches orders of buy and sell automatically. Particulars of each transaction the get recorded by clearing house of the SFE. This house guarantees transactions via marginal calls and novation processes. Novation describes the agreement for replacing one party to the contract with another one. The price of full futures contract is never paid; instead an original margin gets deposited with the clearing house. The margin remains adequate for covering immediate negative movements in prices of contract where it is essential for clearing house to close-out the position for the underlying client (Rick van den Brink, 2015). The clearing house will subsequently mark to market contract on a daily basis. The margin calls maintenance might be made by clearing house needing a broker to top-up an initial margin. This is needed where the prices of the contract has shifted against the client as well as the initial margin cease to be sufficient. Implications of Being Long or Short in a Futures Contract A trader in a long in a futures contract shall be exposed to losses as well as margin calls in case the underlying asset price drops. A long contract position remains obliged to purchase underlying asset; hence they remain exposed to risk that market prices decline beneath contracted prices of futures. Procedures for Closing out these Positions Prior to Delivery The broad majority of open futures position remain closed-out by client prior to date of expiry via taking the reverse contract. A long position happens where the underlying asset has already been bought forward, that is, a buy futures contract. A party involved in a long position shall closeout that open position though the sale of another futures contract with identical product and date of expiry. A short position takes place where underlying asset has already been sold forward. The short position is closable out by going long a future contract with identical commodity as well as date expiry (Nguyen, 2014). Barings Management Duty Failure The Bank malformed due to inability to meet exorbitant trading debts established by Leeson in the behind a bank. The cause of the scandal was primarily due to lack of oversight. Leeson was left to do everything ranging from clearance, booking and reporting several trades keeping, and trade futures. He further control over payments, reconciliation, ingoing as well as outgoing confirmation besides contracts and entries of accounting. The management failed to segregate front office as well as back office alongside the senior management were never involved at all. There was a poor control procedure and lack of supervision (Pollard, 2016). The management breached the cardinal principle of any given trading operations by successfully letting Leeson settling his individual trade by placing him in the charge of back office and desk for dealing. This was tantamount to permitting the individual working a cash till to the bank in the day undertakings in absence of an autonomous third-party evaluating whether quantity banked it at lapse of day reconciled with till receipt. The back office accounts would have confirmed and settled trades executed by front-office as well as reconciled them with particulars sent by the counterparties of the bank while assessing accuracy of price utilized for its valuations internally (Pai Tolleson, 2015). By letting Leeson to be in charge of back office, he had ultimate decision on various payments, negating as well as outgoing confirmation alongside contracts, reconciliation statements, entries of accounting as well as position report. Management thus undesirably and perfectly positioned Leeson to relay misleading or false info back to London. Lesson thus abused his position as the back offices head thereby suppressing info on 88888 account created in July 1992 and nominated as error account in Barings Futures Singapore system yet as a Barings London client account in system of Simex. Management at London failed to acknowledge the existence of this error account because Leeson had requested Dr. Edmund Wong (consultant) to get rid of the error account from everyday report that sent by BFS to London electronically. Importance of Risk Management Risk management is important to the long-run a corporations survival since it allows timely risk identification for effective risk treatment hence barring the company like Barings from collapsing. Nature of Risk/ Risk Management Purpose The credit-risk insinuation of client early payment denoted by top up balances was important in case entire funds dispatched to Singapore were to meet unpretentious customer margin calls. Unfortunately, department of credit-risk never queried the reason Barings lent more than five-hundred million US dollars to the customers for trading on the SIMEX, yet receiving solely ten percent in return. It never appeared to have the notion of who such clients were, but Barings financial losses would have been important in case certain clients ducked. The Committee of credit risk under the leadership of Maclean George insisted that it was a key policy of Barings to finance customer margins till they might be gathered. Nevertheless, not restrain or entire top up funds were established. In fact, customers who were given money in advance in this manner seemed never to have endured any given process of credit approval. This committee ought to have officially taken into account credit aspect of top up balance though they might see development of such loans as logged on balance sheet. Barings Securities credit risk control remained shambolic. The market risk was also a problem since Leeson regulated back-office and since Barings lacked any autonomous unit examination of correctness of his report, the generated market-risk report by risk management unit of Barings as well as communicated to the ALCO remained imprecise. Futures positions of Leeson indicated no market risk since trades remained allegedly balanced by conflicting dealings on additional exchange. Who is Responsible? The risk management objectives, policies, procedures and strategies in a corporation are the responsibilities of the risk management unit of the organization. This unit include the credit and market risk committee and securities credit risk control committee. The credit risk committee was under the leadership of George Maclean. Nick Leeson Case: Comment on Logic and Reasons It is necessary to identify, measure and manage risks. Identification of both credit risk and market associated with Baringss failure could have been avoided if identification, measurement and management were done before the actual operation was done by Leeson. The Main Functions of Capital: Capital has two aspects. The organization must have adequate capital to withstand influence of negative market moves on its outstanding positions and sufficient money to keep such positions going. The management of Baring thought the positions of Leeson were market neutral and hence quite excited to fund margin needs till expiry of contracts. Eventually, such collateral calls from the SIMEX alongside OSE validated too much to bear since they were larger than capital base of Barings forcing the 200-year old organization to call in receivers (Stein, 2016). Existence of adequate capital would have barred such a funding risk that wounded seriously Barings giving room to the terminal shot following the discovery of huge unhedged positions. Thus, the need for interim funding needs of hedged and semi-hedged positions. Basel Ii Capital Accord Framework It is mainly the recommendation on banking besides regulation that Basel Committee issued on banking supervision. Its intention was to amend the global standards controlling the quantity of capital banks must hold to guard against operational and financial risks facing banks. It sought to make sure that the greater the risk to which the bank is exposed, the huger the quantity of capital needed by banks to safeguard solvency as well as economic stability by ensuring sufficient capital for risk facing banks via its lending, trading as well as investment activities. It is three pillars; 1st-mimiminum capital requirement; 2nd-supervisory review and 3rd-market discipline. Credit risk describes that risk of default on debt that might emerge from a borrowers failure to pay required amount. Banks compute via either standardization, foundation, advanced IRB or general IB2 restriction. Operational risk describes risk of an alteration in value triggered by fact that real losses due to insufficient/collapsed internal process, individual besides systems or from outdoor events vary from anticipated losses. It is computed via either basic indicator (BIA) or Standardized (TSA) or the internal measurement method. Market risk describes those risk of losses in position emerging from market price movements. It is arrived at via value at risk method or VaR (Banerjee Tooze, 2017). Types of Acceptable Capital Under Basel- and Basel III capital accords, the minimum risk-based ratio of capital is eight percent. The minimum six percent is held in form of Tier 1 which is the highest quality core capital for instance shares and retained earnings- increased from four percent of the Basel II. The remainder can be held in form of Tier 2 or the supplementary capital. References Banerjee, A., Tooze, A. (2017). The First Modern Bailout: The Barings Crisis of 1890 and the Bank of England. SWOT analysis Strengths There are various sources of strength to a candidate, who is fresh from college, when applying for job vacancies and opportunities in the job market. A fresh candidate has the necessary knowledge and skills for the job that he or she applies for a vacancy or an offer. I t takes at least four years period of comprehensive studying in universities for a student to graduate and qualify to apply for a job opportunity. Four years is quite a long time for training and thus enough to instill the necessary skills in the minds of the student that are necessary for the nature of the jobs that are related or associated with the course of training. Therefore, a fresh candidate from college is most suitable for a job vacancy for he or she has the right knowledge and skills for the job. Secondly, a fresh candidate from university has keenness and desire to learn as additional advantages to his or her strengths. Fresh candidates from tertiary institutions have higher discipline than those who finished colleges and universities a long time ago. Main reason behind this characteristic is the fear and anxiety of the environment outside colleges and universities. In other words, in the minds of a student, real world is harder than world enclosed by education and acade mic activities, and thus are ready to adhere to the rules of the employer as an escape route from the troubles of the real world. Such discipline is highly required by the employers for a disciplined candidate makes a highly promising employee, who deserves the employer’s trust. Graduate trainees greatest strength is highly associated to naivety and fear of the consequences of the real world.Advertising Looking for essay on education? Let's see if we can help you! Consequently, they are ready and willing to work for the money, and hence have a low bargaining power for high payments as compared to those who have stayed quite a while after graduating from tertiary institutions of learning. Thirdly, the nature of fresh graduate’s physique also contributes g reatly to the strengths of fresh graduates in the job markets. Most of the fresh graduates are younger and physically stronger than their counterparts, with whom they seek for job opportunities. Hence, they stand higher chances of being employed into the jobs that are physically involving than their counterparts as they are willing to cope with a job that is physically challenging. Fourthly, fresh graduates are suitable for jobs that demand extensive readings and research for their minds are used to readings and understanding the concepts. Hence, they stand higher chances of acquiring employment opportunities into the research and development teams for they can perform visibility analysis of situations and events and above all base their analysis on literature reviews and reliable readings. In addition, young graduates can work for long hours without fatigue unlike the old aged candidates and thus more desirable to the employers. Weaknesses The greatest weakness for fresh graduates is the stiff competition that has been available in today’s jobs markets. Many candidates opt to further their studies by enrolling for masters’ degrees, doctorate degrees and other certificate courses in order to increase knowledge of expertise and chances of acquiring job opportunities. Fresh graduates lack other knowledge backgrounds to back their resumes with, and hence appearing inferior in the job markets as compared to their counterparts.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Personal Marketing Plan specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Education system seems to have adopted a new route in today’s world. A few decades ago, people used to enroll into the institutions of learning for the sake of acquiring knowledge and hence the intelligence of a person. In addition, there was no stiff competition amongst the learned fellows for everybody enjoyed utilizing his or her knowledge into an area of expe rtise, and their employers awarded promotions based on merit in an employee’s contribution in a workplace. However, things seemed to have taken a new course of action in today’s world. Education is no longer only a source of knowledge and wisdom to majority individuals, but also a source of employment benefits such as promotions and increases in salaries. This scenario has created an abnormal course of action whereby majority are enrolling for degree courses as means to increase their chances for promotions and increasing salaries in their work places. Hence, they have caused college conspiracies as education facilities hawk courses in trying to increase the number of students for financial benefits, but not for the delivery of quality services. Consequently, college degrees have lost value and some employers have opted to ask for masters’ degrees as minimum requirements as opposed to the trend in the past few decades whereby degrees were highly valued for appli cations of job opportunities. Secondly, fresh graduates lack of experience that is highly needed by employers in many employment opportunities that arise. Employers demand highly skilled candidates for some job opportunities, which put off fresh graduates from applying.Advertising Looking for essay on education? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Fresh graduates feel humiliated by such trend, but it serves well to employers who get highly skilled labor as they desire. Tertiary education lacks to provide enough expertise to the students hence locking them out of contesting for job opportunities that demand highly experienced personnel. The third weakness for fresh graduates is the lack of money or capital. It is always a desire of many students to start their own businesses once they get out of colleges, but armed with ideas, they cannot implement their ideas due to lack of money. Hence, they lack the ability to offer job opportunities unless they seek for employment opportunities first in order to acquire the amount of money needed to start their own enterprises. The fourth weakness is the naivety to bargain for better employment conditions as their counterparts. Fresh graduates are more naà ¯ve than old graduates are, and that results to their employers taking advantage of their situations. Hence, they end up working for l ow pays and their employers often overwork them due to their ability to work for long hours without questioning the treatment they get from their employers. Opportunities There are always new job opportunities that require fresh graduates that serve as opportunities in the graduates SWOT analysis schedule. The ultimate goal of every new fresh graduate is to acquire a job amongst many job opportunities that are always available and start planning for the life ahead from what he or she gets from that job. However, the candidate chooses the best suitable job opportunity from the list of available job opportunities that employers have advertised. Fresh graduates have the necessary knowledge and skills for various job opportunities that fall under areas of their expertise. Hence, they can perform better than old aged graduates can if given the opportunity to work by employers. Knowledge and skills are the key components of all necessary opportunities that an employee needs to have for hi s or her suitability in a job opportunity. Threats The greatest threat to a fresh graduate seeking for a job opportunity is the competition in the job market. This competition has resulted from large population of highly trained individuals in the society. In contrast, there are a few job opportunities available for fresh graduates, and such an element poses a threat to the chances of a fresh graduate getting a job opportunity. In addition, majority of the trained individuals lacking job opportunities are more educated and experienced than the fresh graduate is, and thus diminishes his or her chance of acquiring an employment opportunity. The second greatest threat to a fresh graduate in seeking for a job opportunity is the lack of experience that majority employers demand from candidates. Experience results from exposure to working environments where candidates acquire exposures o working conditions and environments. Hence, fresh graduates find themselves locked out of applying for job opportunities whose employers call for experiences. Mission statement The personal marketing plan needs to have a strong mission statement that is capable of motivating an individual and at the same time serve as a marketing creativity tool for pleasing the future employers. My mission statement as a fresh graduate reads: To uphold the company’s rules and policies as stipulated in the company’s rules and regulations statements, and offering my contribution to the best of my ability with accordance to rightful judgments. In addition, marketing the company to the outside world by ensuring there is an adhering of quality production of goods and services under my watch for the sake of maximizing the shareholders wealth and creating a good reputation of the business to the outside world. Objectives First Objective In a bid to contribute to my level best to the company’s affairs and especially in the area of my assignment with a clear goal of ensuring that compan y’s growth and development gears well towards the realization of its vision by conforming to the clearly stated mission statement of the company. Second objective I will conduct myself by upholding honesty and diligence to create a good environment for working under minimal or no supervision as required by the international industrial relations in the labor rules and regulations. In addition, I will follow the stipulated communication channels in the company’s policies in airing my grievances and advise my fellow colleagues upon realizing their ignorance on the same. Third objective I will respect and honor the public in the company’s matters that involve the public and ensure that my behaviors and attitudes towards them add value to the corporate social responsibilities. I will not report anything concerning the company to the media unless advised to do so my public relations manager or the public relations department or relevant authorities. In addition, if re quired to make a public communication, I will protect the name of the company regardless of the nature of internal business environment guided by the heart of ensuing that the external environment is protected for the benefit of retaining the market size. Target markets As a fresh graduate, I will experience some challenges in identifying the best areas that I ought to do personal marketing for my career. However, guided by my heart desires, I will market myself to areas where my training and skills are relevant and highly used in order to attain a competitive advantage over other applicants whose training and skills are less relevant to the areas that they often apply for jobs. According to my strengths, I am best suited in areas that I have learned and acquired knowledge about in my training at tertiary institutions, and I stand high chances of outdoing my close competitors due to confidence in practicing and exercising the skills I possess. Hence, I should have confidence in tryi ng to apply for job opportunities in areas that I am sure of delivering quality services as required by my employer. The most common industries that I can work in include consumer goods package industries and manufacturing industries. My main target is Procter and Gamble Company for it is a competitive consumer package company and was recently rated as the largest in the industry in terms of profitability. The company pays its employees well and awards them opportunities for advancing their training depending on the employee’s contribution. I desire to work at Procter and Gamble Company and wish to get an opportunity to work there, and promise myself to give my best to the growth and development of the company. Marketing Mix Market mix is an important element for applying for job opportunities as a fresh graduate. I will look into four basic elements of the marketing mix, which include the product, price, and promotions. The product, viz. a degree in industrial chemistry, is my basic product that I need to market in the job market. Degree, being an academic qualification, eases the hustle of getting job opportunities after which a fresh employee undergoes training that is in most cases very different from the knowledge acquired from a tertiary institution. Personally, I take my academic qualifications as a key to the industrial job opportunities for being the only product that can sell my knowledge and skills to potential employers. However, it is prone to growth upon my enrolment into university for master’s degree in the near future. This aspect implies that I have plans of advancing my knowledge and skills through further learning in order to acquire a competitive advantage in the industry as well as acquiring a position that I could easily bargain for high salary payments. Secondly, a product has a specific price tag once launched to the market. Therefore, I value my academic qualifications by setting up the minimum salary that I can accept f rom the potential employers. In order to come up with the lowest salary figure that I can accept, I applied the following pricing mechanism. I took the number of years that I have been studying and found them to be nineteen, I calculated the minimum amount of money paid as fees in my university education and found it to be nearly $100,000. In addition, I looked into the minimum wage that a fresh graduate receives in my career field and found it to be $9,000. Hypothetically, I assumed there has been inflation and rated my minimum wage as $9,500 so that by the end of twelve months, I shall have earned more than the amount of money paid for my entire university education. Thirdly, I looked into the place for marketing my knowledge and skills using the degree certificate as the supporting document. I realized that the majority of job adverts in the dailies and advertisements demand experience of not less than five years, which I do not have, but needs am in dire need of a job opportunit y. I decided not to rely on the advertised job opportunities and opted to walk into the human resource offices in specific companies that I would wish to work for and sell my knowledge and skills. I consider it as a bold step that a few fresh graduates opt or even think of taking. This idea of moving into the human resource offices of specific companies, I believe it works. Historically, it worked to one courageous man who walked into Thomas Edison’s office, inventor of light bulb, with a clear goal of becoming his associate and cared less about the nature of job that he could get at initial stages. Fortunately, an opportunity presented itself and the man became an associate to Thomas Edison. That story motivates me for I feel that the same could happen to me if I walked into those offices and present my case before potential employers. Fourthly, I look into ways of carrying out product promotions to my knowledge and skills. Product promotion is a crucial marketing strategy t hat enables the producer to get immediate feedback from the targeted customers. I intended to carryout my personal knowledge and skills in uniquely manner, which would grant me a higher competitive advantage over other job seekers that are available in the society. I intended to walk into human resources offices and I belief I shall leave the office with clear information about whether I stand a chance of getting a job or not and the type of skills that companies need most. Secondly, I also intended to get into social works such as environmental management and create a network with sponsors of such activities who may end up hiring me into their companies. I believe there is no way through which any of the above two ways of product promotion could fail to push me into a job regardless of whether it is in line with my career field. Implementation Implementation is the last step of my personal marketing plan, and the most important for my career objectives. After developing the strateg ies through which I intended to market my knowledge and skills, I have already prepared a timeline with which I shall work with in ensuring that I realize my dream of acquiring a job opportunity. According to my timeline, I shall begin my registering with a social community group that deals with environmental conservation and campaigning against environmental degradation and participate in social works. At the same time, I shall be carrying out the second plan of walking into human resource offices of specific companies. Technology Essays (1907 words) - Apple Inc., NeXT, Free Essays

Technology Essays (1907 words) - Apple Inc., NeXT, Free Essays Technology There isn't hardly anybody around who can say their lives haven't been influenced by computers. Computers have all but taken over society as we know it. Everywhere you look, computers have greatly improved our lives. It can be as simple as going through a carwash, a computer processes the information that we feed it and adjusts the machine accordingly to give us the particular wash we paid for. Computers also play an extremely complicated role in one of the things that everybody uses in their everyday lives, our cars. Most people don't realize how much our cars have been taken over by technology, until they get the bill after one of these computers go out. Just about everything in a new car is controlled by a computer, a computer will read and recognize your driving patterns and adjusts how and when the transmission should shift from gear-to-gear so that you, as the driver, will get maximum performance from your car. In some vehicles, a computer will adjust how high the car rides from the ground. It lowers the car at highway speeds to make it more aerodynamic which will give you better gas mileage and makes the car easier to handle at these high speeds. The latest computer technology is an on-board navigational computer that will direct the driver into using the fastest and most efficient way to get to the destination. It will plan your route around any construction, traffic jams, and even inclement weather. If and when these cars break down, a mechanic will simply ask the car's on-board computer what is wrong, rather than having to go through a series of complicated troubleshooting tests. As I have clearly stated, computers have greatly improved something that most of us use every day. Another advantage of the computer that until recently I was unfamiliar with is the role of the computer in the workplace. I have worked at various jobs in my short existence on this earth. For the most part, the most technologically advanced any of them were was merely punching prices into a cash register, hardly a state-of-the-art process by any means. Most of the jobs I have worked at were more labor-oriented jobs, so I suppose that is why this is kind of a change for me. These days I wait tables at a local bar and grill. I have worked at restaurants like this before, but none of those places were dependent on a computer like this one is. For example, at my old job, when we took orders for drinks we scribbled it down on a sheet of paper and then threw it at the bartender along with another ten people so he could try and figure out just what the heck was written down. This process seemed to take forever. Now all I have to do is go to the computer, press a couple of buttons, and voila, the bartender gets a clear printout of what needs to be made. And with any luck, the drinks should be ready by the time I get to the bar. Needless to say I like the method of using the computer much better than the old way of writing everything down. This has also solved a lot of problems of the same kind in the kitchen, also. As having the experience of being a cook at one time, there was nothing that got on my nerves more than trying to read the handwriting of someone who had to take an order in a room filtering out more than 150 people making noise while trying to jot everything down as fast as they can. As you can probably imagine, this turns into a lose-lose situation for the people trying to work through all of this. The cook is mad at the server for not being able to write the order in plain English. The server is mad at the cook for always being so critical and not worrying about themselves. Eventually the person who is effected most by all of this is the customer. What happens is the cook finally just doesn't care about the order anymore and doesn't prepare a good meal, or the server gets ticked

Gibe, Gybe, Jibe, and Jive

Gibe, Gybe, Jibe, and Jive Gibe, Gybe, Jibe, and Jive Gibe, Gybe, Jibe, and Jive By Maeve Maddox The verbs gibe, gybe, jibe and jive all begin with the sound [j] and are often confused. gibe (verb): to taunt, to insult. Example: â€Å"If he laughed instead of cried when someone  gibed  at him, often the  teasing stopped.†Ã‚   gibe (noun): a sneering comment, a taunt. Example: â€Å"The  teasing, taunts,  gibes  and hurtful acts are a part of me still.† gybe (verb): (sailing term) to shift suddenly and with force from one side to the other when a ship is steered off the wind until the sail fills on the opposite side. Alternative spelling: jibe. Examples: â€Å"As Phil slipped overboard, the  boom gybed.† â€Å"A gust of wind caught their  sail, the  boom jibed, nearly knocking Mr. Snider overboard.† jibe (verb): to make sense, to agree with, to fit in. Example: â€Å"The latest research findings jibe with those recorded in 1934.† The noun jive has these three meanings: 1. a type of fast, lively jazz Weve been wanting to  play Jive  since the band first started. 2. lively and uninhibited dancing. He doesnt quite bounce around like a rubber band during his jive, but does good enough to notch a 7-7-7. 3. talk or conversation, especially talk that is false, misleading, or worthless. It’s time to cut the jive and tell the truth. As a verb, jive can mean to play lively music or to dance to lively music. Example: They spaced each other about four feet apart and  were jiving  to the music. The verb jive can also mean, â€Å"to mislead or deceive.† Maybe the narcs  were jiving  him, maybe  they were  going to shoot him in the back. I searched his eyes for some clue that  he was jiving me. He wasnt.   The most common errors with these words are to spell gibe as jibe and to use jive in the sense of jibe. Here are some examples of misuse from the Web: Incorrect: Arizona Prison Privatization Proposal Doesnt Jive with Market Correct : Arizona Prison Privatization Proposal Doesnt Jibe with Market Incorrect:  But  my opinion  about that  doesnt jive  with everyone elses opinion.   Correct :  But  my opinion  about that  doesnt jibe with everyone elses opinion.   Incorrect: If your child is hurling his own silly  jibes at  the teaser, then its a mutual thing. Correct : If your child is hurling his own silly  gibes at  the teaser, then its a mutual thing. Incorrect: Put-downs, slurs, jibes, and innuendo of all kinds are never purposeless or harmless. Correct : Put-downs, slurs, gibes, and innuendo of all kinds are never purposeless or harmless. The Oxford English Dictionary validates the nonstandard use of jive in the sense of jibe as â€Å"U.S.† usage, but Merriam-Webster Unabridged (notorious for its tendency to embrace all types of questionable usage) does not. The only definition M-W offers for jibe is â€Å"to be in accord.† Its only definitions for the verb jive are related to music, misleading talk, and teasing. Two other much-cited American authorities are careful to distinguish between gibe and jibe: The Chicago Manual of Style A gibe is a biting insult or taunt; gibes are figuratively thrown at their target â€Å"The angry crowd hurled gibes as the suspect was led into the courthouse.† Jibe means to fit, usually with negation â€Å"The verdict didn’t jibe with the judge’s own view of the facts.† The AP Stylebook To gibe means to taunt or sneer: â€Å"They gibed him about his mistakes.† Jibe means to shift direction: â€Å"They jibed their ship across the wind.† or, colloquially, to agree: â€Å"Their stories didn’t jibe.† Summary The sailing term may be spelled either gybe or jibe. The latter is more common in US usage. The verb that means â€Å"to agree† or â€Å"to fit† is spelled jibe. The noun and verb that convey taunting are spelled gibe. Crisis communicate Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Crisis communicate - Essay Example The videos were watched by at least 1 million people all over the world until the videos were finally pulled out of the social media almost two days later (Jacques, 2009). Vice President of Corporate Communications, Tim McIntyre, carried out an analysis of the situation within the first 24 hours of the release of the videos and reached the conclusion that the videos were not a prank. This led to his communication, both externally and internally, with the concerned audience that included but was not limited to the security head, senior management team, and social media people. McIntyre collaborated with GoodAsYou.org, the consumer watchdog organization, that alerted the top management of Domino’s about the videos, that led to the identification of the workers as Michael Setzer and Kristy Hammond. Customer’s requests were started to be responded to by the company on Twitter by Tuesday. Common questions of the customers included whether the videos were released deliberately by the company or if the management was surprised at the release; why the management had not issued an official statement about the videos; and what would the management do about the whole crisis (Jacques, 2009). President of Domino’s Pizza, Patrick Doyle, officially recorded an apology by Wednesday which was uploaded on YouTube. The crisis was captured in case studies and articles by a host of bloggers and journalists over the following many days. This paper provides an analysis of the crisis communication strategies used by Domino’s Pizza after an unfortunate incident it experienced in 2009. The Arthur W. Page Society is charged with â€Å"embracing the highest professional standards; advancing the way communications is understood, practiced and taught; and providing a collegial and dynamic learning environment† (Arthur W. Historty argumentativ paper -see details in intruc Essay - 1

Historty argumentativ paper -see details in intruc - Essay Example The feminist movement had the greatest impact on American history because it fully brought to light the importance and fairness of gender equality in all aspects of the human life. Prior to the early 1900s, women were regarded as property of their husbands than as individual human beings. Anything that needed to be tended to in the social community or in the political community would be a task for the husband. If a woman were not married, she simply would not play a role in the goings-on, such as voting. Being considered below men, it was believed that women had no reason to vote. While most people were happy with this arrangement, or at least used to it, there were many women who could not wrap their minds around the blatant inequality, so protests began that fought for suffrage. The protests were not centered so much around the fact that women wanted to do what the men were able to do. Rather, these women were more concerned by the idea that they were being thought of as lesser human beings than men, and it was all because of their gender. America, a country that prided itself on the freedoms and opportunities that it offered, was holding back an entire gender and insisting that women were inferior to men and did not deserve the same privileges. The primary reason that women were ever given as to why they could not vote was because politics was considered to be a predominantly masculine business. As such, women had no place in voting, running for office, or having any say in politics. The feminist movement consisted of women who did not believe that the rights and privileges of citizens should be gender-oriented, and they used that belief to fight for something that they felt they honestly deserved. The feminist movement gave women the right to vote, a privilege of being American citizens that they deserved. This success was not simply just changing the minds of those in charge, but it was a success that included making it an amendment of the United States

Cyclical Political Theory Essay Example for Free

Cyclical Political Theory Essay Personally, I subscribe to the opinion that what we have in this world is a necessary connection between things. Technically, something can not come out of nothing. Actions are interrelated and whether we accept it or not, they overlap. Thus, I accept George Modelski’s position in his cyclical political theory. However for me, this principle is not only limited to only political events but all areas of life. In the case of World War I and World War II, I hold the position that both of them are not two separate political events. Why do I hold this claim? The truth is that if we look at both events critically, one would see that both wars are one and the same, only that it was fought in different locations and at different years. I provide the reasons for my position below. To begin with, the issues that surrounded the war are one and the same. The Germans wanted to dominate Europe and knew that to achieve this, they had to root out some other powerful nations like France, Britain, Russia and America. The German leaders also felt threatened by the expansion of Russia and wanted to root them out before they could overshadow the Germans. Furthermore, both of them were between colonial Lords. Apart from this, both wars was a scenario where the good guys are trying to stop the bad guys – the Allies being the good guys while Germany and their alliance being the bad guys. In both wars, we see elements of ideological propagation where one party wanted to feed their ideas to the other party. Summarily, I believe that the world war two was just a way of bringing what could have been brought to an end in World War I to an end. It involved the same set of people who were fight for the same cause and wanted to achieve the same results. Changing Cultures in the book North and South :: essays research papers

The way of life in England was quite different depending weather a person was in the north or the south. From the types of houses to living standards, working conditions to types of jobs, who you talked too to they way you buried the dead, the north and south had completely different ideas about how a person should live. The book North and South depicts the changing cultures of the north and south of England through the industrial revolution in the mid eighteen hundreds. In the town of Milton, which is in the northern part of England Strikes have aroused throughout the factories. The strikes were the immediate cause of the social unrest. The people in Milton are dissatisfied with the working conditions of the factories. They work long hours in bad breathing conditions, children and women work, and they are paid extremely poorly. These factors created a causal chain which led to the strikes. The class distinctions are the remote effect of the North and south. In the South the predominant class is the middle to upper class. It is the people who can afford to have servants. The minority in the south is the servants. In the North the predominant class is the factory workers. They are the lower class. They have a hard time making enough money to buy enough food to put on their families tables, even Edwards 2 though normally in a family the father, mother and most children work. Class distinctions are more then just working conditions they are also how the people conduct themselves. For example in the higher class when someone dies, the women do not generally attend the funeral because they are stereotyped as being too emotional to attend. Also in the higher class they do not observe the body after it has died. In the lower class everyone attends a person’s funeral. It is almost rude not too attend a person’s funeral, they celebrating the person who has just died not morn over them. The lower class also has a viewing of the body for friends and family. The Industrial Revolution played a major role in the creation of the North and of the South. Until factories started being built everything was rural. Once factory town started being built ways of life changed and class standards changed.

Endurance of the Human Spirit

Endurance Of The Human Spirit The Iliad and the movie Precious, based on the novel Push by Saphire, both share a common theme where the main characters depict an uncommon endurance of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Although in The Iliad, war is horrible and bloody, the spirit of Achilles is never broken by this adversity because, like Precious, who suffers physical, mental, and sexual abuse at the hands of her parents, their human spirit is the driving force behind their desire to overcome their challenges. As a result, the endurance of their human spirit is strengthened and they emerge victorious. These two characters reflect the uncommon strength of the human spirit because when their body is defeated, or their mind is loaded with emotion, this drive within them pushes their limits. A character analysis of Achilles and Precious is farfetched because they are two very distinct characters in two very different worlds. According to Greek Mythology Achilles' character existe d long before the biblical Jesus Christ. This means he lived more than 3000 years ago, whereas Precious, is a an illiterate, obese 16-year-old girl with two children who lives in the New York City ghetto of Harlem. However, these two distinct characters have commonality when we look beyond their physical being and look within their souls. Here, Achilles and Precious possess an unyielding human spirit that serves as an engine that keeps them moving forward in the face of impossibility. From a superficial analysis, Achilles and Precious are both warriors in their own ways. It is obvious that Achilles is a warrior because he is one who fights in the armies of Kings and battles enemies for gain. He is no ordinary fighter, but a fearless and skilled one who is recruited for his physical strength and success.Agamemnon enlists him to fight for his army when he goes to war with the Trojans because he is aware of his exceptional skill. Therefore, in his own eyes and in the eyes of others, Ach illes is a warrior. This characterization is not as obvious when we analyze Precious. Precious is a warrior even though she does not know it and others do not regard her as one. She became a warrior because she was born into a family of physical and sexual abuse. At the age of 3, her father started to sexually abuse her and her mother's constant humiliation only served to degrade her. However, it was due to this unfortunate circumstance the she developed into a warrior. Precious is battling her drug addicted, alcoholic, and emotionally unstable mother. In the movie there is a scene where she is at the top of the stairs in her home, with her mother below tossing a pan at her while telling her that she is â€Å"stupid bitch (Precious). † In this case, her parents are the enemies she has to defeat to survive. This can destroy you unless you have a strong will. Each has a reason to develop a drive to prevail. It is this strong desire to overcome in the face of physical impossibilit ies that sets them apart from ordinary people. Achilles and Precious have an inner human spirit that drives them to overcome the obstacles in their lives. Achilles continually strives to be a great fighter because he wants to be remembered after one-thousand years. This is partially his motivation and he demonstrates this when he utters, â€Å"You talk of food. I have no taste for food – what I really crave is the slaughter of blood and the choking groans of men. † (Homer 495).Here, after a successful battle, Agamemnon is commanding that a feast be prepared for the soldiers. Achilles strongly rejects his gift and says that there is no time for eating when he has rage for fighting in his heart. Achilles has only one thing on his mind and that is to fight because his drive is his desire to be recognize. This does not completely characterize Achilles because towards the end of the movie, when he kills Hector, and Priam is begging Achilles for his body, he says, â€Å"No more, old man, don't tempt my wrath, not now! Don't stir my raging heart still more.Or under my own roof I may not spare your life, old man †¦ suppliant that you are †¦. † (Homer 606). It is obvious that Achilles has many characteristics. Here, he is fearless, selfish, and at the same time compassionate. Unlike Achilles, whose human spirit was driven by selfish reasons to be grand and recognized, Precious was motivated by a desire to be remembered. Initially, Precious is an insecure, weak and helpless person. Her father rapes her and cannot depend on anyone to defend her. This incestuous relationship is a heavy weight for her to carry. However, she does eventually gather the strength and stands up for herself. This is very evident when she states, â€Å"The other day I cried. But you know what? Fuck that day. That's why God, or whoever, makes other days. â€Å"(Precious). Here, we have a powerful statement by Precious who has endured so much emotional and physical a buse. By the time she makes this statement, she has given birth to two children by her own father and has endured enormous mental abused by her mother. Her mother states, â€Å"Don't nobody want you, don't nobody need you. (Precious). This type of abuse can cause anyone to commit suicide. It is a crippling experience for most people, but Precious build up the strength to defeat the abuse and believes there is another day. Even though she has given up on the notion of God, she still believes in herself. This is Precious' reflection that her human spirit will survive anything. It may appear that Achilles and Precious do not have anything in common because almost everything about these characters is different, but as their characters develop, we learn otherwise.First, we have one character who physically survives and the other one dies. However, each one is a warrior in their own way and in their own world. As warriors they must choose between fighting or giving up. What makes both of these characters extraordinary is their inner will to fight challenges that appear insurmountable. Achilles is recognized as a great warrior, but his spirit develops even stronger than his own physical body due to his experience in the battlefield.Precious also develops into a warrior as she fights the sexual and physical abuses of her parents. She demonstrates that she is a strong person because she ends up being a survivor and not a victim of her parent's abuse. Both of these characters demonstrate that the human spirit does not surrender and will overcome just about anything in life. Works Cited Precious. Dir. Lee Daniels. Perf. How Trees Improve Environment

Trees are ancient living organisms that existed since the creation of the Earth and have been crucial to the Earth’s ecosystem. The age of a tree is determined by cambium, a layer of growing bark, which forms a ring in the wood of the tree. Each ring of cambium, tells the age of the tree. The climate can also determine how fast a tree grows. For instance, in cool climates, cambium only grows in the spring and summer. But there are some cases where you cannot determine the age of trees, like the trees in a tropical rain forest. The cambium grows all year round. Yet these trees do not have rings. Consequently without the cambium rings, it is difficult to tell the age of these species trees. Since trees have an s As told in the Holy Bible, â€Å"And the Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. † Just as is stated in the Bible, there are all kinds of trees, in all kinds of shapes and sizes. But how important are trees? If all the trees were removed from the Earth, what impact would this have on the environment? Determining the answers to these questions will be a guide in learning about the importance and value of trees in the ecosystem. Trees can have a positive effect on the climate, by shading the ground, trees cool off the Earth’s temperature. Strategically planting trees around air conditioners, windows and the walls which receive the most sun will help in reducing energy costs. Normally, the best position to plant trees is on the west, east and south. It really depends on a specific geographical location. However, according to American Forests’ research, even urban cities get the benefit of cooler temperatures from trees within distances of 35 miles. In fact, American Forests’ research determined that trees saved approximately $2. 8 million annually to Atlanta’s metro city as well as an annual savings for other metro areas across the United States. In addition, in 1991 a partnership between American Forests and the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) along with other partners developed the Cool Communities program to promote trees as energy conservation tools. This program was a great success. It helped to educate the public on the ecological and economical importance of trees. But how do trees cleanse the air we breathe? Trees actually eat up the carbon dioxide that is emitted by cars, trucks and factories then releases oxygen (clean air) for us to breathe. Its almost like we feed them the carbon and they repay us with clean breathable air. The fact is one tree can absorb 48lbs of carbon annually and at the same time release enough oxygen to support two human beings. An acre of trees absorb 2. 6 tons annually which is enough carbon dioxide to cover the emissions from a car that is driven 26,000 miles. It is safe to say that we can all aid in having pure breathable air just by planting one tree. The U. S. Forest Service states that during a period of 40 years (1952 to 1992) an estimated 309 million tons of carbon was removed by trees. This is another reason why trees improve our environment.

The Hound of the Baskervilles Essays

The Hound of the Baskervilles Essays The Hound of the Baskervilles Essay The Hound of the Baskervilles Essay Essay Topic: The Hound of the Baskervilles Arthur Conan Doyle lived in London in the late 19th century. His career was not exactly very successful in the early stages of his life. It started as him being a doctor onboard a ship, he was then a general practitioner in Southsea, but this career did not work for him either, and later he became an unsuccessful optician! So Doyle made the decision to dedicate himself to writing. Undoubtedly his most famous works are the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Watson. They were loved by all the public, who made Holmes a cult figure. When people read Doyles books it allows them to think that they live in a world rid of crime and violence, a safe place with no criminals and murderers nothing like the London in the late 19th century. The novel was written in 1902, the main plot of it is that many years before a member of the Baskerville family, Hugo Baskerville, had beaten a young lady and had kept her in the house as his prisoner. While at a banquet this lady escapes and runs onto the moor to attempt to escape. Hugo, when he discovers she has escaped gathers his men and chases her onto the moor. Hugo then decides to go ahead and chase the lady personally. After a while, his men come to see whether he has caught the lady, but they are horrified to see that the bodies of Hugo and the lady are lying dead on the floor, they are then terrified at the sight of a Gigantic hound standing over Hugos lifeless body, ripping flesh from his throat. Since then, it is said that this hound stalks the Baskerville family, and will kill any of the descendents if they wander over the moor at night. In addition to the legend of the Baskervilles there are many other features that also make the novel successful as a horror and suspense thriller. Firstly, the scene is set on the moor, a barren and desolate place with a very evil reputation But the moor with its mysteries and its strange inhabitants remains as inscrutable as ever. Secondly, within the moor there are many supernatural things such as the Grimpen mire. The Grimpen mire is an area of bog with rather strange tales been told about it. The novel is set late into the Victorian era. Conan Doyle did not set out to change the world with his novels, but to entertain the Victorians. It is a classic detective story, during the Romantic period of literature. It is a Gothic tale. There are many elements of macabre that link this novel with the Gothic genre. These include the setting in the wild moor, set at night time. The most important link is that to the phantom hound, and especially the eyes. Its eyes glowed with a smouldering glare. There is a strong link to the Gothic genre with the mention of phosphorescent eyes. There is a stereotypical set of characters, the hero, the trusty sidekick, the damsel in distress, and of course the arch-villain (black-sheep). It is all very melodramatic. The hero is Sherlock Holmes, who is very clever and is always right. The sidekick is Dr Watson, who isnt that clever, and tends to get things wrong. The damsel in distress is Stapletons sister (actually Stapletons wife). The arch-villain is no other than Stapleton himself.

How to Reference an Ebook †Chicago Style

How to Reference an Ebook – Chicago Style How to Reference an Ebook – Chicago Style The Chicago Manual of Style is used in various academic fields and sets out a system for citing sources. And when writing a paper with Chicago style citations, you may need to know how to cite an ebook. Footnotes or Author-Date Citations? The Chicago system is unusual in that it permits two types of referencing, covering both â€Å"notes and bibliography† and â€Å"author-date† styles. Remember to check your institution’s style guide for advice about which to use. Well look at both styles in the rest of this post. Ebook Citations: Notes and Bibliography â€Å"Notes and bibliography† citations are most common in the humanities. The basic format uses superscript numbers in the text to indicate a footnote, in which you provide the relevant information for the source you’re citing. For an ebook, this includes either the format or URL where it can be found: n. Author Name, Title (City of Publication: Publisher, Year), Format/URL. For example, the first citation of an ebook for Kindle would appear as: 1. Michelle Bookman, How to Write Ebooks (New York: PMP Publications, 2015), Kindle edition. Subsequent references to the same source can then be shortened to just the author surname and title: 1. Michelle Bookman. How to Write Ebooks (New York: PMP Publications, 2015), Kindle edition. 2. Bookman, How to Write Ebooks. If you’re quoting a source, remember to provide the relevant page numbers in your footnote. If no page numbers are available, use a section, chapter or paragraph number instead: 3. Bookman, How to Write Ebooks, 75. 4. Bookman, How to Write Ebooks, chap. 2, para. 13. Every cited source cited must be added tot he bibliography. The information to provide for an ebook is similar to the first footnote, but the punctuation is a little different and the authors names are reversed: Author Surname, First Name. Title. City of Publication: Publisher, Year. Format/URL. For the example above, the bibliography entry would be: Bookman, Michelle. How to Write Ebooks. New York: PMP Publications, 2015, Kindle edition. Ebook Citations: Author-Date Style The â€Å"author-date† format is more common in the sciences. When referencing an ebook, in-text citations should include the author surname and year of publication in parentheses: Writing ebooks is simple (Bookman 2015). If you’re quoting the source, citations need page numbers, too (either in the main citation or after the quoted passage if author is named in the text): Writing an ebook will be â€Å"simple† (Bookman 2015, 7). According to Bookman (2015) ebooks are â€Å"easy to write† (7). You then give full information in a reference list using the following format: Author Surname, First Name. Year of Publication. Title. City of Publication: Publisher. Format/URL. For example, we could list an ebook as follows: Bookman, Michelle. 2015. How to Write Ebooks. New York: Penguin Classics. Kindle edition.

Joe Orton and the Counter Cultural Movement in the 60's Essay

Joe Orton and the Counter Cultural Movement in the 60's - Essay Example The hardship during the days of the Second World War gave birth to the newest possible philosophies that state it is obvious to follow the trend of open market economy with all its perception of high yielding materialism. This hard cored materialism and pro life oriented attitude was previously known in the western world but now it came into a maximized form which sociologist refer as a pro active action against the mass destruction and insecurity of the last great war. The latest philosophy was to obtain as much as possible that life has to offer. Every social aspect changed with it and along with it changed the world around them. Plays and writer were no different. Colours became more vibrant and approach became more outrageous to keep up with the society. Joe Orton's plays were a product of this period. The funny side of this approach was however different from the basic perception of the life styles of the 1950's through the later 1960 were a confluence of conflicting philosophies. ... (Fletcher, 135-9) It is a well known fact and it has been shown time and again by many literary historians and researchers that the main targeted audience were the baby boomers who had all the opportunities to take all the advantages of almost any and every marketing gimmicks. But Joe Orton's plays had their own vibes even though they supported the antiestablishment norms of the time. Joe Orton was born in 1933 at Leicester and is famous for his social satires in modern playwright history. His career actually span only five years from 1964 to 1967 but within this short time he amused, shocked and outraged the audience with his prolific sense of black comedies that are predominantly scandalous in nature. His major plays include The Ruffian on the Stair, Entertaining Mr Sloane, Loot, The Erpingham Camp, The Good and Faithful Servant, Funeral Games and What the Butler Saw. During his short term as a successful playwright Joe Orton depicted in his plays what was going around in the outer world but he presented them in his own unique manner. (Fletcher, 221-26) Entertaining Mr Sloane was first presented on 1964 and this play appears to be a sexual innuendo with the treatment of a dark presentation. Here we find the characters indulge themselves in murder and rimes associated with murder with little or no repent at all. The sexual approach appears to be reflecting the course of action of the 1960s and ethical values are just not entertained at all. More in alignment with the context of the antiestablishment principals the characters are not will the authority to bring or reach to the aspect of justice but they are more concerned with the living and tend to extract the most out of

International Finance Paper (Home Depot) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

International Finance Paper (Home Depot) - Essay Example During the years 2008 and 2009, the company was forced to lay off more than a thousand employees and 54 stores across US had to be closed. This includes the whole of the EXPO Design Centre Chain, which was engaged in high end retailing. In the year 2009 the company logged a sales figure of $71.288 billion, which was $20 billion less than was at it was in 2007. This paper deals with the various financial issues encountered by Home Depot during the course of its operation and talks about the measures, which the company is undertaking to deal with the same. As a business policy, HDI was engaged in mergers and acquisitions from the early days of its operations. The company also later on diversified its operation into other countries like Canada and Mexico, where in it needed expert advice on the various complex issues related to international finance. In these circumstances the company made a deal with Invemed Associates, who are engaged in the business of investment banking. An investment bank has departments like the Corporate Finance, which deals in the areas of mergers and acquisitions along with providing finance related consultancy to the clients. Another important division in the company is of the Research, which is concerned with analysis and valuation of shares and bonds, the recommendations on which are then presented to the clients. An investment bank also provides consultancy to their client’s for raising debts and equity from the market. Invemed Associates is required to constantly monitor the financial health of HDI and report on the same to the Board of Directors of HDI. Invemed is also required to inform the board on any economic trend that is relevant to the type of business in which the company is engaged in. Invemed Associates advises HDI every time it wishes to borrow money from the market or issue securities to the public.  (FindLaw, 2009) Before the sale of Home depot supply in

Artificial Intelligence Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 2

Artificial Intelligence - Essay Example Alan Turing, then, modified the ‘imitation game’ and put a man or woman, and a computer in another separate room. The judge’s job was to decide who is a man or machine among the two contestants. Based on the second version of the experiment, Turing argued that if the ‘judge’ can pick a computer or a human using his mind, then, the computer is a simulation of a human and hence it is intelligent. The Turing has been modified further in that the imitation game has changed where there is a single contestant, a human or a computer. The judge’s job in this test is to decide whether the single contestant is a human or a machine (Moor 143).  Alan Turing proposes that the definition of intelligence can be passed to machines (computers) in that he believes that computers can be programmed to act like humans. He advocates for the question and answer method because it includes the human behaviour of talking by responding to queries. In his 1951 paper, Tu ring writes that â€Å"in fifty years’ time, computers can be programmed to play the imitation game such that any average interrogator (judge) will have less than 70% chance of identifying the correct contestant after asking questions for five minutes.† The Turing test supports the fact that if a human being is replaced by a computer and the game’s results remain unaffected, then, the machine would be equally intelligent as a human and capable of thought (Moor 144).  Turing supports his arguments by stating that machines are capable of thought if only they cannot be distinguished.

Introduction 1.1. Background and Justification Urbanization is an inevitable part of the economic development process for any country and is considered a global phenomenon (Rigg et al., 2009) . However, it is only in recent years that the rate of urbanization has begun to accelerate. More than half of the world population is dwelling in urban area. Urbanization is one of the inevitable phenomenon right now, as the result of this there is need and growth of high rise buildings which are having many types of uses and new types of shared ownership and also underground infrastructure such as sewage, train tunnels (subway), electrical and communication network is becoming dense and complex more over multi-use of land parcel creates new problems and challenges. (Jazayeri, Rajabifard, Kalantari, 2014) Traditionally the land parcel information which includes geometric, visual and legal data is managed in 2D. It is difficult in 2D map to make simple operation such as volume of space, cannot perform various spatial analysis that is necessary in various other field of urban planning as the data is in 2D. 3D visualization for dissemination is very difficult using just the 2D data in cadaster system (Mohamed Anders, 2012). This is where the 3D cadaster comes into light.endi One of the biggest hurdle in developing the 3D cadaster is the creating the 3D building geometry representation that are suitable for 3D cadaster. Although there are CAD model available that represent the 3D blue print of the building, the real on ground situation can be different then what is on the CAD model so it is necessary to calculate the 3D measurements of actual built building. I want to research how we can create a 3D model that is suitable for 3D cadaster, one of the possible methods can be using laser scanning data. Laser scanning data has very high accuracy which is suitable for land administration needs. AHN -2 (Actueel Hoogtebestand Nederland) is the project in Netherlands that aims to collect high resolution laser data of entire country (van der Sande, Soudarissanane, Khoshelham, 2010). Although AHN-2 data is accurate the point density is not enough to be able to convert it into a polygonal geometry model as the AHN-2 is taken from high altitude it covers the roof of buildings adequately but the facades of the building generally have less point density which results in anomalies. The proposed solution to take multiple images of the building from all the sides (facades) to construct a point cloud of that building, the minimum number of images required will be analyzed using techniques discussed in (Alsadik, B., Gerke, M., Vosselman, G., Daham, A., Jasim, L. ,2014), then register this point cloud with the AHN-2 point cloud then this point cloud is used to generate 3D model 1.2. Literature review This section talks about the concepts, ideas that are discussed throughout this proposal. Cadaster: Urbanization is a process by which town cities are slowly transformed from rural form to urban form 3D cadaster: Cadaster registers real status of real estate objects until now the spatial information use to register the legal status of land in two dimensional systems that is a parcel is defined by 2D juridical boundaries. 3D cadaster What is a 3D Model A 3D Model is a mathematical representation of any three-dimensional object (real or imagined) in a 3D software environment. Unlike a 2D image, 3D models can be viewed in specialized software suites from any angle, and can be scaled, rotated, or freely modified. The process of creating and shaping a 3D model is known as 3d modeling Laser scanning Laser scanning is technique of controlled deflection of laser beam visible or invisible to capture the information of target in 3D from airborne or terrestrial platform. Airborne laser scanning is carried out from aircraft while terrestrial laser scanning can be done from a stationary or moving platform. Point cloud: point cloud is a set of 3D points in the same coordinate system. Often intended to represent a external surface of an object. Point cloud file is just the set of numbers representing X, Y, Z in coordinate system. Point cloud registration: Point cloud registration is a process of merging 2 separate point cloud having different origin and into one . Stratified sampling method: Stratified is probability sampling technique in which the researcher divides the entire population into different groups and then sample is collected from equally from each group. So that the selected sample can represent the population well. 1.3. Problem statement In past recent years there has been a lot of development in 3D. Netherlands is actively promoting for participation of over 65 private, public and scientific organizations to promote the use of 3D information covering issues such as acquisition, standardization, storage and use (Elberink, Stoter, Ledoux, Commandeur, 2013). Although there are many paper that suggest different methods to extract building from point cloud I want to look into alternative way of designing a 3D model of building by combining two point cloud from different sources. 1.4. Tradegy in Greek Literature :: essays research papers

Tragedy in Greek Literature   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When one hears the word tragedy, they might think of someone dying in a car wreck, being killed in a plane crash, or even a massive tsunami that wipes out nations. This type of tragedy is the most common, but when referring to Greek literature, a tragedy is an outstanding piece of drama originating in Ancient Greece. Greek tragedy originated in honor of the god of wine, Dionysus, the patron god of tragedy. The performance took place in an open-air theater. The work tragedy is derived from the word â€Å"tragedia† or â€Å"goat song.† Aristotle said, â€Å"Tragedy is largely based on life’s pity and splendor (Lucas).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Greek tragedy would not be complete with out a tragic hero. Sophocles, the great writer of tragedy, wrote of noble and courageous heroes with specific â€Å"tragic flaws† that lead the hero to his downfall. In Aristotle’s analysis of Greek tragedy he states, â€Å"Greek tragedy has an effect on the audience called â€Å"catharsis,† or purging of the emotions (Mcavoy).† The two specific emotions that Sophocles provokes are pity and fear. Sophocles wrote Antigone with a specific character in mind for this noble hero. Creon fits the image of the hero with the â€Å"tragic flaw.† Creon is significant because he is the king. The hard decisions that Creon is faced with, is what makes him fit Aristotle’s image of a tragic hero. Creon faced decisions that lead to a no-win situation. He believes that Polyneices should not be buried because he was a traitor to his family. This decision affected Antigone greatly, and Creon knew that the decision would be hard on some people. Family and burials are very important in society, and Creon is asking Antigone to not consider them, to only consider that Polyneices was a traitor to his home city. Creon is then faced with the knowledge that Antigone went against his will and law, and buried her brother. Again, Creon is faced with a hard decision. He must choose to kill his own family member and uphold the law, or punish her less severely and show that he is not serious about death as a punishment to his law. Creon doesn’t want to show weakness, even for family, but he doesn’t want to kill Antigone, who is not only his niece and sister, but engaged to his son. The final decision that Creon must make is whether or not to revoke his death sentence on Antigone.

Martin Luther King V. Malcolm X

Alan Mason Period 8 Martin Luther King v. Malcolm X Martin Luther King has been known for using peace to help him get equality among all people but especially African-Americans. He was not the type of leader that resorted to violence in order to get the equality that he fought for. King has been known for moving people by the use of his speeches like King's I Have a Dream and Vie Been to the Mountaintop speeches. King shows through these speeches that even though he was determined to get equal rights for every African-American, he as only going to stick to subtle, nonviolent ways like court cases, protest, and boycotts. This philosophy is the exact opposite to Malcolm X, another Civil Rights Leader, who thought that African American should not waste their time on protest and boycotts (Document 7). Malcolm, like King, was not in favor of violence but believe that African Americans should by all meaner use violence to protect themselves when they â€Å"attacked by racists† (Docum ent 9). But, Martin Luther King's philosophy was more beneficial for the African-American community then Malcolm Ax's because the effort that he put Into his nonviolent philosophy made gaining rights more successful and more meaningful.Martin Luther King showed that he had the better philosophy compared to Malcolm X because of his stance on violence. One way King upheld his beliefs was through protest. King said In his Our God Is Marching speech, â€Å"We are on the move now. The burning of our churches will not deter us. We are on the move now. The bombing of our homes will not dissuade us† (Document 4). So Protesters, Including King himself were having their homes burned down for retesting for what they believe Is right. In March of 1965 King and other protesters walked In order to raise awareness of the need for a Voting Right Act. This Act was passed later that year. But even though they achieved their goal for voting right does not mean that the protesters did not receive opposition for their actions. Mass arrest, police attacks, and state troopers blockading all occurred throughout the walk. If King chose to fight back then that could have either delayed getting the Voting Right Act approved, or It may have been felt that African-Americans did not deserve to get the Act approved. But King Just showed by obtaining from violence you can still get what you want. Martin Luther King showed that there were other ways to fight for what you want aside form fighting Itself.King did this by using boycotts and strikes. He said, â€Å"There Is nothing quite so effective as refusal to cooperate economically with the forces and Institutions. † King realized that one of the ways he was going to get American to give them the rights that African-Americans wanted was by disrupting the flow of money that was going Into the Caucasian shops. This meaner by not buying from places that o not offer Jobs for African-Americans then those businesses would see how much they needed the African-American community, even If It meant having to hire African- American workers.Malcolm X did not agree with boycotts and strikes he said, â€Å"We have to learn how to own and operate the businesses of our community and develop to be involved in picketing and boycotting other people in other communities in order to get a Job† (Document 7). But this idea completely went against the philosophy of being together not separate. If this would have happened then the country would eave always been separate and things would have never been equal.Martin Luther king has been known for using his words instead of his fist when it comes to defending what he many thousands of others believed to be correct. King once said in his I Have a Dream speech that he had a dream that â€Å"former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood†¦ They will not be Judged by the color of their skin but by their charac ter†¦ We will be able to work together, pray together, to struggle together, to go o Jail together, to climb up for freedom together† (Document 2).King fought for African Americans rights by using his words. He told the people of his desires for and equal and fair life where people could live in harmony with each other and not be judged by their skin tone. He thought of a time where there would be no more separate but equal as were stated prior, people would be able to â€Å"work together†¦ And go to Jail together. † (Document 2) So by using his speeches where thousands of people came to listen to him talk, he moved a nation to be in favor of his reasoning's.In conclusion, Martin Luther Kings philosophy was more beneficial for the African- American community then Malcolm Ax's because the effort that he put into his nonviolent philosophy made gaining rights more successful and more meaningful. King kept up with his no violence idea by participating in other thi ngs that got America's attention like protest, boycotts and speeches. King strives to achieve equality and because of his hard efforts he has succeeded in more ways than one to help African-Americans get the same civil rights as Caucasian Americans.
